4/20 '12: #Toronto Smoke Out at Yonge-Dundas

The event known as four-twenty got a gentle start at noon today as mellow participants slowly started to congregate at Yonge-Dundas Square for Smoke Out 2012. As the occasional herb smell got picked up in the brisk wind it only foreshadows what the square will be like as 4:20pm approaches. Past years efforts saw hundreds of people crowded into the space, some looking for munchies, feeling festive and looking happy. A few musicians have already arrived, ready to provide an additional soundtrack to life in the city.
Several bicycle police are on hand but they are making no effort to wander into the urban park, instead they stay along the sidewalks of Yonge Street making their presence known.

The Toronto Hash Mob is gathering this afternoon for a public protest and to show their support for the legalization. Websites also note the upcoming Saturday May 5th Global Marijuana March (GMM).
Later in the afternoon the crowd had grown enormously as had the police, but the smoking continued peacefully as ever more people came downtown to partake in the event. The water fountains kept everyone to the Dundas side of the square and most people seemed content to sit down and chill.
