Bunny at Brookfield Place

Amanda Parer's inflatable white rabbit looks into Allan Lambert Galleria from the Garden Square beside the TD Canada Trust Tower in Toronto. He looks late, late for a very important date.
The public art installation at Brookfield Place (Bay and Yonge Streets at Front Street) is called Intrude and has been seen in 19 major cities around the world. The current tour of North America includes the Toronto visit from March 14 to 23, 2016.

It is a perfect time to visit as Easter Weekend is coming up and he can help deliver chocolate eggs to all the good little girls and boys, after he checks his list once and twice. The bunny sculpture is quite large and illuminated in white light and has been a winner of several art competitions. "They represent the fairytale animals from our childhood – a furry innocence, frolicking through idyllic fields. Intrude deliberately evokes this cutesy image, and a strong visual humour, to lure you into the artwork only to reveal the more serious environmental messages in the work. They are huge, the size referencing “the elephant in the room”, the problem, like our environmental impact, big but easily ignored."
Australian native Amanda Parer now lives in Tasmania but she notes that rabbits have become a massive pest that causes extreme damage to the natural environment, resisting attempts at controlling the population - you know how those bunnies are?

The four pillars of graffiti on King St E

Graffiti faces stare out from the concrete supports holding up the Adelaide and Richmond Street East grade separations. The T shaped structures look onto King Street in the east end of Toronto were painted as part of StreetARToronto which supports street art and adds "character and visual interest to city streets".
"StART Underpass Program (StART UP) is a competitive, application based program that provides support to street artists to install graffiti art on the walls of underpass structures. StART UP provides flexibility to install street art murals in locations that have not attracted an application under the Partnership Program. Underpass areas can be stark, unattractive and sometimes uncomfortable places for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists at the best of times and more so when tagged or marked with illegal graffiti. Replacing illegal graffiti vandalism with attractive street art benefits the local community and makes the area more appealing to visitors and commuters."
Plus I found out that this is the Corktown part of the city. See more of the murals after the jump.

Love Locks in the Distillery District - update

There is a lot of love in Toronto as the locks continue to pile up on the art installation in the historic Distillery District. Erected in July of 2014 using steel and reclaimed lumber the locks were sparse in the initial months but if your heart is in it, you can still find room to put on your lock.

See more locks and the district after the jump.

James Hinchcliffe comes to Toronto

The Verizon IndyCar driver is eager to get back into his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda race car after his serious May 2015 crash at the Indy 500. During practice laps at the famous Indianapolis Brickyard his vehicle experienced a mechanical failure and he slammed into the concrete walls at high speed, putting him in the hospital for several surgeries and off the track during the balance of the 2015 season. He acknowledges that 10 months off the track is a long time for a competitive driver, but racing is what it is all about and he worked hard to get back into the car.
The recovery is progressing well and his pre-race training ends with next week's IndyCar season opener at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 13, 2016. Not only is he back with his old team and major sponsors like Arrow Electronics, SPYDER and Honda in the Number 5 car, he returns with new sponsorship from Petro Canada Lubricants. He said that he is very pleased to have some Canadian sponsors and to wear another Maple leaf on his race suit. This is the home stretch and his engine will be fired up next week for the real deal.
James Hinchcliffe (left) and Daniel Torchia (right)

Welcoming him back to the race season was Daniel Torchia who led a James Hinchcliffe meet the media event at Toronto Downtown Honda on Monday, March 7, 2016. We spent some time discussing the accident and the long process to get back up to speed. James doesn't remember the crash itself, he blacked out during the impact and is impaled by part of the suspension. Emergency personnel get him out of the damaged car and transported him to a nearby hospital where the first surgeries began within an hour.

When he wakes up and meets the doctors he can only communicate by pen and paper, so one of his first questions was when can he get back into a race car? His doctor asked what was wrong with him and he simply said he was a race car driver. Getting better meant strength training on the core and upper body, later followed by leg exercises. One of his major concerns was about the injury to his neck. Driving at high speeds, especially on street courses like the bumpy track in Toronto, puts quite a strain on the neck. Getting back into the car relieved him of his concerns and he said that once he got it out onto the track his normal life resumed.
While PlayStation kept him a little occupied in the off times, he really kept busy with training and being on race track sidelines monitoring the cars and their drivers. He really felt that the support he received was overwhelming and he appreciated the time that people took to reach out to him with cards, cards and messages. These are some photos of James at the 2015 Honda Indy Toronto.
The Mayor of Hinchtown will return to Canadian tracks during the Honda Indy Toronto 2016 weekend race from Friday to Sunday, July 15-17 in Exhibition Place.

Halton Bike Tree

Trees and bikes, what happened next will have you doubting pedal power! Or maybe a hurricane blew by and deposited a substantial amount of bicycles in the willow tree along the 15th sideroad. This mystery may never be solved until they invent something like a series of tubes where you can look up stuff.
Okay, the internet exists and the bike tree is to support Pedaling Against Poverty. They have been up there for a couple of years, now it is probably just a pain in the butt to take them down, so what the heck, leave them up there. The house is up for sale now, the owners probably didn't like all the bikes in the neighbourhood.

Warming Stations in the Beach 2016

Freeze Thaw was the theme of Toronto this winter, now it has extended to the open design competition for the temporary lifeguard stations installations. Walking along the boardwalk, avoiding the crap load of doggies having enjoyable romps in the snow and exploring the whackadoosical Winter Station Designs is a perfect way to spend a sunny day in the big smoke. I believe my favourite design was by Darth Vador - his death-star installation, photo at top, was magnifique!
In the belly of a bear

"This year we are expecting to include up to thirteen lifeguard stands across Balmy, Kew and Ashbridges Bay beaches located in the heart of the Beach community, south of Queen Street East, between Woodbine and Victoria Park Avenues. These utilitarian structures are to be used as the armature for temporary installations which will need to be able to withstand the rigours of Toronto winter weather. The exhibition is to run February 15, 2016 until March 20, 2016."
Winter might have been tougher than I thought because the installation named Lithoform, above, lost all the side panels that covered its plywood shell. The unpredictable side of winter makes it a challenge to design a sturdy station that will survive the wind and blowing snow, yet still engage the public.
Fire Place
I also like the warming stations that have heat, especially a toasty fire for a cold day, while one bus stop looking station was aptly named Sauna.
