Court upholds eviction from Toronto St James Park

Some of the Occupy Toronto St James Park campers have started pulling out of the park after the court ruling that paved the way for the movements eviction as sought by the City. As some of the protesters start to remove their possessions more people (protesters and media) streaming into the area has rapidly increased the population in the park in anticipation of the eviction process. Several protesters chained themselves to the Yurt which has been serving as a library (photo at top).
Several bike police were across the road from the park and a few lonely protesters called out to the police while inside the park they larger group congregated around the gazebo.
News crews wait for the eviction process.
The City of Toronto press release states that the municipality “is pleased by Mr. Justice David M. Brown’s ruling announced today that the City's notice issued on November 15 is constitutionally valid. The City respectfully asks Occupy Toronto and others occupying St. James Park for their cooperation in peacefully complying with that ruling.
The City is grateful that Mr. Justice Brown has upheld its right to require that the tents or other structures not be erected or maintained in our parks, and that individuals not use, gather or enter City parks from 12.01 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.

“The City has worked to balance people's right to protest with public safety. However, this unauthorized use of a City park has interfered with the rights local residents have to the quiet enjoyment of their parks and homes and has negatively affected many area businesses. City parks are for all residents to enjoy and there are bylaws that govern their use that must be respected. It is time for this to come to a peaceful end," said Mayor Rob Ford.

“Protestors are required to remove all tents, shelters or other structures,” said City Manager Joseph Pennachetti. “The City is willing to assist to ensure the safe and orderly removal of these materials. We are asking for protestors to cooperate and respect the Court’s decision. It is our intent to facilitate this peacefully.”

Shelter, Support and Housing Administration staff will continue to be available at the Adelaide Women’s Resource Centre to assist anyone who may need help with shelter, housing or other supports.

The City extends its appreciation to the Court for its timely consideration of this matter.”

Occupy #Toronto waits on court ruling

Judge Brown will rule tomorrow at 9am on the #OccupyTO takeover of  St James Park (the sign above shows the occupy fist and an "I'd occupy that" saying). Meanwhile in front of St James Cathedral a number of people spoke to the media in hopes that if the occupation is found in defiance of the City's bylaws and not protected by the constitution that the Cathedral might provide sanctuary to the protesters. The Church has already stated publicly that they are unable to help the Occupy Toronto movement if the courts uphold the City's eviction order.

Gerald Parker (in white at the microphones, above) who is a member of the St James congregation hopes that the church has been pressured against providing sanctuary and will continue with dialogues with the Church to enter into a partnership.
Homeless former Mayoral candidate Kevin Clarke used his powerful voice to hijack the press conference, dressed sort of like Santa, shouting things like a Christmas present is included in Canada's Constitution. I am surprised after years of yelling on the streets of Toronto he hasn't burned out his voice.
Meanwhile back in the park the tents remain, whether full or mostly empty (probably the latter), the port-o-potties look like they haven't been emptied since they were installed and are getting full. Reports of a stench in the park I think are overrated and overall the park is cluttered but generally clean. Still the protesters are of the semi-professional type ready for confrontation - which may come early tomorrow.

A canopied wagon looking like it was created by artist Gregory Alan Elliott looked pretty cool in the park. It has room inside for one tiny bed and was covered over in old political yard signs and now plastered with Gregory's graffiti artwork, including sayings and a big red heart.

Defrost Your Swimsuit

@visitlauderdale (#defrost) had a glass enclosed trailer in #Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square with two hot models inside, one female in a bikini and one male with a six pack in swim trunks. They were promoting travel to greater Fort Lauderdale with sunny.org. You can go to the Star's website to enter a contest at Defrost.TheStar.com.

They were also passing out ice scrapers which will come in handy if you don't win a trip to Fort Lauderdale.

Toronto Santa Claus Parade 2011

HO HO HO, Santa and his gang took over the downtown core today while thousands of people lined the streets of #Toronto during the November 20, 2011 Santa Claus Parade. I imagine hundreds were injured as candy was thrown willy nilly-like and the parade floats crashed in the streets as they fought in the style of Ben Hur's chariot races. I think Santa's float had those sword things on his wheels as his massive solid gold chariot easily overpowered the smaller, more innocent floats. Santa waved to those that survived as he savoured his crushing victory. Post by James and Joe Hamilton.
Crowds rush in to help the survivors along the Bay Street Parade route.
Out came the swords as the army tried to battle Santa
EMS crews fought the Reindeer and ripped out the deadly antlers, then wore them as trophies

#Toronto's Bloor Yorkville BIA was celebrating the Holiday Magic Festival with beautiful Santa's Elves passing out yummy chocolates. They were dressed in a variation of Santa's suit, rosy red with white trim and stockings. Posted by Joe Hamilton.

Occupy #Toronto Yoga Studios

You know when your protest message is being lost when the name gets adopted as a business slogan - like Occupy Yoga Studios. Plus I have also seen that stupid commercial on TV about the Occupy Suits. And of course one of the favourite guy sayings is Occupy Bathroom.

Toronto Eaton Centre Swarovski Tree and Giant Reindeer

The #Toronto Eaton Centre is filling up with Holiday Cheer as giant reindeer (that light up with long strings of bulbs) stand in the long hall of the mall while the Swarovski Crystal Wish Christmas Tree has been unveiled in centre court. The 35 foot rotating tree was unveiled by host Justin Trudeau on November 22, 2011 and is decorated with 10,000 crystals.

"Also new this year, children will have the opportunity to create their own Swarovski ornament! Beginning November 24th for four consecutive Saturdays, Swarovski Stars for Wishes Workshops will run from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. each Saturday with four half-hour sessions. Children will receive a kit containing a star, ribbon and crystals and can use the contents to create their own personal ornament - a perfect gift for mom, dad or grandparents! All proceeds from the $20 kits will go to The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. The activity is recommended for children ages five and up and parents are encouraged to register for a session in advance at the Swarovski Gallery Store as space is limited."

Rockwood Conservation Area

Late fall is a good time to go for an adventure walk in you local park and conservation areas - most of those dying leaves have fallen to the ground (except for all the cedars) so views are a little clearer and those pesky mosquitoes are non existent. Rockwood Conservation Area is located on the Niagara Escarpment and is a good candidate for a tour with cool mill ruins, waterfalls, lakes and tiny islands. The park is closed for the winter but you can still view nature by coming in the back door so to speak.
The Grand River flows through the park and the water levels have been reduced substantially for the future spring melt of snow. The low water has opened up several islands to exploration with land bridges previously hidden below water.
"Towering limestone cliffs, caves and glacial potholes, including one of the world's largest, are a few of the natural wonders at the Rockwood Conservation Area. You can view them from hiking trails on both sides of the Eramosa River or in a rented canoe. The conservation area has over 65,000 visitors a year from near and far and offers excellent recreational opportunities only a short distance from major metropolitan areas." from the GRCA website.

Santa Claus Parade in Acton

Santa and Mrs Claus warm up for the big #Toronto Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, November 20, 2011 by participating in a number of parades throughout the GTA. It seemed to go pretty well during their stopover in small town Acton, Ontario so hopefully the elves get the carriage all spit shined and ready to roll tomorrow.

TTC Rails

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has been rebuilding many of the streetcar lines that run through downtown city streets. Sometimes they prefab sections of rail and crane them into place and sometimes they put them in one rail at a time. A gaggle of rails waits for installation in the photo above.

I am not sure if it is the beginning of the line or the ending.

Torontoland Snowman at City Hall

Another Torontoland Snowman has been found at the corner of Bay Street and Queen Street West, sitting in front of Toronto City Hall. The Snowman is green, yellow and blue and joins other versions found in Berczy Park and the Historic Distillery District.
I hope they are just temporary art installations and not a growing army of superpower robots shaped like snowmen; intent on taking over our fair city. The hulking metal beasts, looking very innocent for the moment, lay low and wait for their opportunity to strike as their numbers grow. Beware the snowmen overlords.

Update: I think the sentient monsters are awakening. This one obviously moved in the dark of night and now sits by the skating rink.
