Homicide #21/2012 at the Eaton Centre

The #Toronto Eaton Centre has almost returned to normal after the 6:15pm Saturday, June 2, 2012 fatal shooting in the lower level food court. With one person dead and several others wounded in the shooting it was not hard to be shocked at this violent incident. On Monday June 4 the Shopping Mall is now open and only the Urban Eatery food court has its escalator entrances barred - it is not expected to open until tomorrow. While I photographed the eatery from above someone threw a lone bundle of flowers down to the empty floor.
Media crews blanket the sidewalk along the Yonge and Dundas intersection, reporting on site and getting word on the street interviews. Two of the revolving doors leading into the Eaton Centre are blocked off, full of flowers, stuffed animals, a sign and a poster taped to the glass door for people to sign. The sign said “Use a pen instead of a gun.” I think that the available news suggest that this was gang related violence which has kept the outpouring of grief to a minimum. However, three of the seven other victims, two of them critical, remain in hospital with one young child in a coma.

At 2pm Toronto Police will hold a news conference to discuss the arrest made in homicide #21/2012. The suspect turned himself into Police 52 Division in the early morning today.
