Honest Ed's lights and free turkeys

Most of the bright lights of the big city are found at #Toronto's Honest Ed's and with it's high wattage display of lights and coloured signs you would think you're hitting the slots in Vegas. Started in 1948 and located at 581 Bloor Street (Bloor at Bathurst) the 160,000 sq ft bargain emporium is open 7 days a week and sells groceries, housewares and clothing and lots of other stuff. Honest Ed's was recently in the news for it's 24th annual Turkey giveaway on Sunday, December 4, 2011. The tradition started in 1987 by the father continues with the son David Mirvish who gives out about 1,500 frozen birds to the people who lineup days ahead of the giveaway.

From the stores' website "A landmark for tourists and an entertaining shopping experience for all. Honest Ed's is a one-of-a-kind bargain centre that has everything from wine to twine. "New York has Macy's, London has Harrods, Chicago has Marshall Fields, and Toronto has Honest Ed's. It is quite an attraction - honest," proclaims The Great Toronto Getaway, Buffalo, USA. Welcome, don't faint at our low prices, there's no place to lie down. "We don't offer service. We have a slogan--serve yourself and save a lot of money."
Ed Mirvish is also well known Restaurants and for bringing the Entertainment District and live theatre to life in Toronto, starting with the Alexandra Theatre and followed with the Princess of Wales Theatre.
